RESPIRATOR / GAS MASK. The M48 was issued exclusively to US Army AH-64 “Apache” helicopter crews. While the general aviators (all helicopters except Apache) use the M49 mask. The mask was issued to replace the M43 in service. Form-fitting facepiece with lenses mounted close to the eyes; an integrally attached CB hood and skull-type suspension system; an inhalation air distribution assembly for regulating the flow of air to the oronasal cavity, lenses, and hood; a pressure compensated exhalation valve assembly for maintaining overpressure in the mask/hood; an electronic microphone; and a portable motor/blower filter assembly which operates on either battery or aircraft power. The mask provides the required CB protection and allows for compatibility with the AH-64 Integrated Helmet and Display Sighting System and the Optical Relay Tube. The mask is lightweight, comfortable and provides a close fit and tight seal around the face. A nose cup is incorporated for reduced fogging of the facepiece. That material is impermeable to chemical agents such as mustard, providing maximum assurance. Meets NIOSH CBRN standard. PILOT AR5 (MK5) AIRCREW NBC RESPIRATOR / GAS MASK / HOOD / HELMET. These RARE masks were in service from 1979 up until the early 1990s. Where chemical warfare was a threat, the AR5 was donned by military pilots for safe passage through the skies. An AR5 comprises a single piece rubber hood and heavy rubber cowling. Incorporated in the rubber hood is an aircrew oxygen mask and transparent visor. Could also be used with a handheld respirator – affectionately known as the’Whisting Handbag’ – which provides breathing air until the mask connects into an aircraft oxygen system.
