&####127482;&####127474; United States World War 1 Corrected English Type Box Respirator Size 3 Wide. The Corrected English Type Box Respirator was an improvement over the older failed American Small Box Respirator from early 1917, improving upon the terribly thin facepiece, lack of a valve bracket, and larger filters, with a thicker facepiece, better lenses, a greater hose and filter system, and a better carrier. This example of the Corrected English is quite an interesting one, entirely due to the filter it was issued with, being a Type J, though being manufactured by Landers Frary and Clark, a company introduced in 1862 in New England Connecticut. Prior to WWI, LF&C produced items such as cutlery and home appliances, though when WWI had started in July of 1914, they had to rework their products to fit military standards, this led to the production of Mess tins, Knives, Cavalry Swords, Canteen cups, and Gas mask items. LF&C had produced not only these strange Type L filters during the war, but they also produced removable lenses, Flory Washers (stiffeners for inlet tubes), and mouthpiece busings (device that prevented the rubber mouth piece of the inhalant tube from collapsing). According to a history of the company written by Barbara Ann Duggan in 1953, the company made the gas mask components at the facility that it opened in the State Trade School on South Stanley Street Duggan, Landers, Frary & Clark invented an important and life-saving development during World War I. It was reported that a new type of poisonous mustard gas was formulated by the Central Powers, and the existing gas masks were ineffective against it. Landers, Frary & Clark, along with the U. Army devised a new filter that was effective against the new gas, which is what you happen to see here. Landers, Frary, & Clark designed the necessary machinery for the production of the filters and five other New Britain manufacturers, P & F Corbin, North & Judd, Russell & Erwin, Hart & Cooley and the American Hosiery Company, assisted it in making and assembling the new filters. Together, the six companies produced 300,000 of them for immediate use.

&####127482;&####127474; United States Corrected English Type Box Respirator dated 1917 lot 432059-C size 3. The Corrected English Type Box Respirator was developed in October of 1917 as an improved model of the American Small Box Respirator, which itself was an American clone of the British Small Box Respirator of 1916. The improvements seen on the Corrected English Mask lie in the facepiece, filter, lenses, and harness system. The corrected english mask is made of a cotton sailcloth facepiece with rubberized sealant coating the interior, with the hose normally being an 18-inch style rubberized corrugated hose that connects to either a Type G, Type H, Type L, or Type G Canister if we are strictly speaking of 1918 style canisters, as the earlier models used in around 1917 would possibly be the Type D, Type E, and Type F canisters, though this is simply speculation. The carrier for this mask is an MI chest carrier, developed in 1917 by a plethora of manufacturers, and being made of a sort of waterproof duck canvas and features a singular strap system which would be worn around the neck with the front of the carrier facing the soldiers chest for easier donning of the mask. The later models of corrected English masks would feature a plastic style of lenses and thinner valve bracket as opposed to the thick glass lenses and thicker valve bracket. The accessories for this mask are an Anti-Dimming composition, and an issue card which would hold repair tape and occasionally a pin for adjusting the harness, though this was removed when the adjustable harness for the late models of CE was developed. Carrier has a name crossed out.

WWI vintage US issued “Corrected English Box Respirator” model as issued to American Expeditionary Forces in France 1918. Bag is dated 1918 and has hand written identification of soldier: Pvt. Charley Rider 337, Field, A, Med. My guess is the 337th Infantry Regiment, which had a Medical Detachment. The “Field, A” is a mystery, as there is no Field Artillery unit associated with the 337th Infantry, perhaps the A refers to a company, in which case the field meaning is unknown. The letters preceding “France” are a similar mystery, as they do not clearly indicate a town or department. I have researched the soldier and potential units for hours without a concrete answer as to who this particular doughboy was, or where he was stationed in France. The unit served to replace losses in other units and did not enter the trenches together as a unit. This particular soldier could have started with the 337th and then have been transferred to another unit to serve. See condition description for more details, as well as the photos. I attempted to show to item as faithfully and comprehensively as I could without compromising the condition of the mask. If you have any additional questions or would like any more information please contact me. This item is in the category “Collectibles\Militaria\WW I (1914-18)\Original Period Items\United States\Personal, Field Gear”. The seller is “thehiddentriumph” and is located in this country: US. This item can be shipped to United States.
