WWI US Army Doughboy NAMED Gas Mask & Bag Corrected English Box Respirator

WWI vintage US issued “Corrected English Box Respirator” model as issued to American Expeditionary Forces in France 1918. Bag is dated 1918 and has hand written identification of soldier: Pvt. Charley Rider 337, Field, A, Med. My guess is the 337th Infantry Regiment, which had a Medical Detachment. The “Field, A” is a mystery, as there is no Field Artillery unit associated with the 337th Infantry, perhaps the A refers to a company, in which case the field meaning is unknown. The letters preceding “France” are a similar mystery, as they do not clearly indicate a town or department. I have researched the soldier and potential units for hours without a concrete answer as to who this particular doughboy was, or where he was stationed in France. The unit served to replace losses in other units and did not enter the trenches together as a unit. This particular soldier could have started with the 337th and then have been transferred to another unit to serve. See condition description for more details, as well as the photos. US WWI Military Issued Corrected English Model Respirator Gas Mask WW1 USA CEM

Listing is for a Vintage WWI Corrected English Model C. Gas Mask / Respirator with Repair/Instruction Card. Legendary Mask for the Best of Collections! Was the standard issue American gas mask during the late years of WWI, the design was based off of the British Small Box Respirator (SBR), using the best features in it’s design and improving others, then, the American CEM was born. Technically speaking the C. Is basically just a canvas bag that has a paper thin rubber coating on the inside, two lenses to see out of, with a nose peg / mouthpiece system. The nose peg/clamp blocks the user from breathing through the nose, forcing breathing through the mouthpiece which is directly connected to the hose which leads to the filter. The filter would sit in a bag which would rest against the user’s chest. Comes from a Smoke-Free and Pet-Free home. Feel free to ask questions! Came from a collection where we were told that this was used during the war. This is a very old piece and as such there is some normal wear/tear, discoloration, and some stiffness.
